Neddy, Freddy, Emma & Kate welcome you to Kiltale Holiday Homes and Farm.
Regular eating, relaxation and a gentle stroll is their idea of a perfect day at Kiltale,
Oh! by the way, they’re the donkeys and the goats...
Suggested Itinerary
Day 1
Spend the morning on the Farm. Watch farmer Micheál milk the cow and learn all about life on a working farm, with entertainment and fun mixed in for good measure.
Head off to the Hill of Tara, the ancient inauguration site of the High Kings of Ireland. Guided tours are available until mid-September and the surrounding views are spectacular.
Support Kiltale Gaelic Football or Hurling Teams if there’s a game on at the local club. The green/maroon colours are the team to shout for.
Day 2
Pack up a Picnic and take a trip to Trim. A mere 10 minute drive from Kiltale, but there
are many interesting things to see and do in this
Heritage Town. The town trail, Castle and Visitor are just a few to mention Children will enjoy echo gate, shout and listen to it go go go!
Day 3
Family Day at
Rathbeggan Lakes. Fishing is just one of the options at the Lakes. Angling alternatives include Nature Trail, Disc Golf, Falconry, Waterpistol Warzone and Coffee Terrace.
On returning to Kiltale, divert to Bective Abbey to find the substantial remains of Ireland’s second Cistercian monastery dating back to 1147. A great place for hiding and exploring.
Boyne
Valley – Wander through Time
Mary & Micheál Lydon foster all who come to visit Kiltale Holiday Homes right down to teaching them a ‘cúpla focal as gaeilge’ (a few words in Irish). Though the accommodation is self-catering, guests are made feel most welcome by the extended Lydon family, both two legged and four legged. Such is the rapport between Mary, Micheál, the Lydon
children and their family of animals that they all have names!
Life revolves around the farm here at Kiltale and guests are encouraged to interact with the animals and experience some of the day to day activities involved in running a working farm. Milking goats, feeding chicks, donkey and pony rides and collecting eggs are just some of the jobs in which to get involved and with a fully equipped playground a goat on the trampoline is not an unusual sight. Even non-animal enthusiasts often leave Kiltale converted having learned to handle the smaller animals.
When the animals are all fed and looked after, there are a host of other places of interest all within a short driving distance of Kiltale Holiday Homes. Enjoy a bracing walk over the earth sculptures and mounds on the Hill of Tara, the ancient religious and cultural capital of Ireland. Guided tours are available until mid September and the views from the top are amazing reaching right over the
Boyne Valley and beyond. The tea and scones in Maguire’s tea shop are to be recommended.
The heritage town of
Trim is a 10 minute drive from the accommodation. Pack up a picnic and enjoy it by the river or there is a good coffee shop in the Visitor Centre. That’s the food organised. Start out from the visitor centre on the town heritage trail and follow the 22 points of history weaving in and out along the Boyne discovering churches, cathedral, gates and steeples, this walk takes approx. 1 hour and brings you back in front of the Castle. The really informative guided tour of
Trim Castle brings you right to the top. Lucky little visitors can sometimes get to unlock the great door of the keep. There is a great playground in Trim and for softer days an indoor pool will keep everyone entertained.
Rathbeggan
Lakes is like a close relation to Kiltale encouraging the love of outdoor life, animals and activity. Families can partake in fishing or simply enjoy some of the ‘angling alternatives’ such as the Nature Trail; Disc Golf; Falconry, playground, bouncy castle or the water pistol warzone. All too energetic, simply sit back and relax on the Coffee Terrace.
On the journey back to Kiltale, take a small diversion to Bective Abbey a 12th Century monastery site with well preserved cloisters. A great spot for hide and seek!
Neddy, Freddy, Emma, Kate hope you enjoyed your stay at Kiltale Self Catering Holiday Farm.
